Meet your Canine Coach

Cam Barclay

G’day, I’m Cam.

My love for dogs began with my first companion (and first love in life), a white Staffy named Pirate Pete. Growing up on the family boarding kennel, I formed deep connections with countless dogs, shaping my character and fuelling my lifelong passion for them. Despite a detour into a career in finance, dogs have always held a special place in my heart.

During the Covid lockdowns in Melbourne, my wife and I adopted a Staffy puppy named Beau. Living in a unit without a yard presented challenges, and Beau didn’t get the usual development opportunities. This experience ignited my desire to help dogs with behavioural issues.

I joined a mentoring group of elite dog trainers and became deeply passionate about understanding and modifying dog behaviour. I left a well-paid corporate job to work as a dog trainer and behaviourist at a Melbourne shelter, where I could fully dedicate myself to my true calling.

I have now worked with thousands of dogs of all breeds, shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Along the way, I’ve built a network of incredible people in Australia, including dog trainers, behaviour experts, and vets, who share my commitment to improving dogs' lives.

I founded Act of Dog to help people truly understand their dogs, giving our best mates the best chance at a healthy and fulfilled life. I specialise in fear and aggression cases, as these dogs are often misunderstood. With the right management and behaviour modification, they can be helped immensely.

My wife and I now live with Beau, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier; Mike, the American Staffy cross Rottweiler; and Mookie, the Staffy cross Labrador, as well as our three cats. Thankfully, we now have a house with a yard, making it the perfect home for our furry family.

Magic Mike

G'day, I’m Mike, the American Staffy cross Rottweiler, Head of Inter-Dog Communications at Act of Dog! I'm not just a pretty face; I'm also a top-notch dog trainer.

Cam found me at the shelter where I showed off my great skills with other dogs. I had some medical hiccups, but Cam visited me every day. One day, while we were out for a walk, Cam had a bright idea—adopt me and make me part of the Act of Dog team!

I quickly became part of the family, living with Beau the Staffy, three cats, and the occasional foster dog at Act of Dog HQ.

I’m especially good at helping dogs that are scared, frustrated, or anxious around other dogs. Controlled and gradual introductions are my specialty.

Cam often checks in with me, and together we decide when to get closer to a reactive dog. The running joke around here? I’m the best trainer in the house—and honestly, they’re not wrong!
